The BEI San Francisco Design Story

In collaboration with Steinberg Hart

BEI San Francisco

When it comes to architectural design, our driving philosophy is:
To cultivate BEI Hotels into a destination for you to ‘stay, work, play’

However, before we dive into our renovation process, we’d like to take you through a quick history of our building.

Once upon not-too-long-ago time, this is what you would have seen from Market Street: a Holiday Inn hotel built in 1969.

The original engineer behind this building, T.Y. Lin, was an immigrant from China, and he is the mastermind behind the original structure and shape of the building that you see today. He also designed the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, along with the east span of the Bay Bridge.

Fast forward to now: you now see a striking black building from a distance.

New BEI Hotel San Francisco

The impression of the hotel from afar is that this hotel is different to the surrounding lighter colours of Market Street.

And different, to us, is a good thing.

As you walk closer to the front façade, you’ll see the metallic mosaic that is iconic to our hotel.

As it is unlike any other building in the Mid-Market/SOMA neighbourhood, BEI San Francisco strikes the memorable balance of familiar modernity along with a sense of something innovative that has not been done before.

Upon entering the large doors of BEI San Francisco, you are ushered into our vast lobby area.

Our intention with our public spaces is for creative openness and calming playfulness. So, we opened up our first floor, literally.

We wanted to offer a space that’s accessible and flexible to what our hotel guests would need, as well as the locals in the San Francisco area. So here are a variety of spaces for events, programming, coworking, mingling, and more:

  • The REN Cafe serving Stumptown Coffee
  • An open co-working area with many plugs and complimentary WiFi
  • The SUM Bar and Restaurant
  • Private multi-function/dining room for up to 20 guests
  • The DEN with communal games and multimedia projection capabilities
  • A grand ballroom that can be separated into 3 smaller intimate spaces
  • A 7,000 sqft. rooftop with a gorgeous magnolia tree and wonderful views of San Francisco

Even though what we’re talking about is the architecture and design of the physical building, our focus really is about the individual experience.

After all, what is a building without the most important element: the people in it.

The hotel rooms are designed with minimalist comfort in mind.

The overall neutral tones create a sense of zen that is a much-needed breather for the hectic traveller and the on-the-go business person.

But the tiny details of colour accents inspired by BEI San Francisco’s brand colours gives you a burst of joy and inspiration needed to kickstart your day.

Surrounded by San Francisco’s top companies and high-end residences in the up-and-coming SOMA district, we connect with our local neighbourhood and the city of San Francisco through brand partnerships, private events, and curated pop-up experiences.

Since we opened our doors in February 2019, our hotel has become a hub for meetings, events, and simply hanging out.

There is always something happening in BEI San Francisco. Stay connected so you won’t miss out on what’s ahead!
